This Thematic Guide is intended as an aid to those researching United Nations peacekeeping operations past and present. It provides a comprehensive guide to internal UN information on peacekeeping operations, information on peacekeeping training centres, details journals dealing with UN peacekeeping, and state-by-state links to government websites dealing with UN peacekeeping efforts by selected countries.

Department of Peacekeeping Operation (DPKO)
DPKO is one of the departments of the UN Secretariat. It assists the Member States and the Secretary-General in their efforts to maintain international peace and security. The Department's mission is to plan, prepare, manage and direct UN peacekeeping operations so that they can effectively fulfil their mandates under the overall authority of the Security Council and the General Assembly, and under the command vested in the Secretary-General.

Department of Political Affairs (DPA)
DPA provides advice and support on all political matters to the Secretary-General in the exercise of his global responsibilities under the United Nations Charter relating to the maintenance of peace and security. The Department carries out activities related to the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, peace-building, electoral assistance, substantive support and secretariat services to the Security Council, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, and the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

Report by the Panel on United Nations Peace Operations (The Brahimi Report)
The report is a summary of the panel’s findings in August 2000 on United Nations Peace Operations. The panel, set up by the Secretary-General, Kofi A. Annan, was chaired by Lakhdar Brahimi to assess the United Nations ability to conduct peace operations effectively.

United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library (Peacekeeping Operation)
The Dag Hammarskjöld Library is a special library whose mandated role is to serve the information needs of the United Nations permanent mission staff and secretariat staff. The Library also provides research guidance for external researchers who are interested in the United Nations and its documents. There is a section for peacekeeping operation within the research guidance.

Peacekeeping Research and Training Centres

Canadian Peace Support Training Centre
The Centre was stood up in July 1996 at McNaughton Barracks, CFB Kingston, Ontario. Mandated by the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, its role is to prepare the Canadian Forces personnel for deployment anywhere in the world for any peace support operation.

George Mason University (Peace Operations Policy Program)
Established in 1994 in cooperation with the School of Public Policy, George Mason University at Arlington, Virginia, USA., POPP offers a Master of New Professional Studies (MNPS) degree in Peace Operations. It is designed for students and practicing professionals to engage in the planning, regulation, management, and conduct of peace operations.

International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres
The International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres was founded in Canada in 1995 at the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre. The aim of the Association is to facilitate communication and exchange of information between the various peacekeeping training centres and/or among people responsible for, and interested in, peacekeeping training.

International Peace Academy (IPA)
Founded in 1970 by a group of individuals from within and outside of the United Nations, IPA is an independent, international institution dedicated to promoting the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts between and within states through policy research and development.

Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) (Peacekeeping Studies Department)
Base in Accra, Ghana, the KAIPTC offers Ghanaian, regional and international participants the opportunity to examine specific peace operations issues at the operational level and to update and share their knowledge of the latest practices. Whilst initially serving as a Regional Centre of Excellence, it aims to develop into education, training and research facility, embracing all aspects of peace operations.

Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (Canada)
Established in 1994 by the Government of Canada, the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre is an independent, non-profit organization whose mandate is to support Canada's contribution to international peace and security.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) (Peacekeeping and Regional Security Project)
Initiated in 1993 at SIPRI, the Peacekeeping and Regional Security Project research on multilateral conflict prevention, management and resolution. A particular focus is placed on the UN and other international peacekeeping operations.

UNITAR Programme of Correspondence Instruction in Peacekeeping Operations (UNITAR-POCI): United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
UNITAR was established in 1965 as an autonomous body within the United Nations with the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the Organization through appropriate training and research. POCI was established in 1995 as a correspondence training course on UN peacekeeping operation for military officers, non-commissioned officers, diplomats, civilian employees of ministries of defence, teachers, and citizens interested in peace.

Conflict Trends (African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes)
Conflict Trends is a journal which offers a unique, at-a-glance overview of both developments in conflicts and positive steps towards renaissance on the continent of Africa. Also included are in-depth articles focusing on conflict analysis including the issue of peacekeeping operation. It is published by the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD), an international civil-society organization.

International Peacekeeping
International Peacekeeping is quarterly journal which examines the theory and practice of peacekeeping. Its principle is that peacekeeping is essentially a political act in which military forces, frequently in a condition of partial demilitarization, are the instruments of policy at an international level.

The UN and Conflict Monitor is a quarterly publication produced jointly by the UN, Conflict Unit at the United Nations Association-UK and the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), University of Bradford.
