Information about the one-year MSc, Violence, Conflict and Development.
This new programme responds to the increasing significance of
various types of conflict in developing countries, including

The EPU is based in Stadtschlaining, a small town situated about
120 km south of Vienna, and 100 km north of Graz in Austria. It

- Graduate University for Advanced Studies: the National Museum
of Ethnology
The Graduate University for Advanced Studies which was established
by 14 inter-university research institutions, has four schools
for postgraduate doctoral education. One of these schools, the
School of Cultural and Social Studies, has two departments (Regional
Studies and Comparative Studies) which are run by the National
Museum of Ethnology, Osaka. The departments offer supervision for
students who wish to research in ethnic conflict, ethnic minority
problems and nationalism issues especially from an anthropological
perspective.

- Hiroshima City University: The Faculty of International Studies
The
Faculty holds International Politics Course for undergraduate
students. As one of the main subjects of the course, Peace Studies
is coordinated by academic staffs of the Hiroshima Peace Institute,

contemporary violent conflicts, conflict resolution, causes of

for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) is designed

- Hitotsubashi University: The Institute for the Study of Global
Issues (ISGI)
As a graduate level institute in Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo,
ISGI offers MA and Ph.D Programs. ISGI especially focuses on conflicts
between ethnic groups and civilizations, and endemic poverty by
organising lectures such a Peace Studies, War and Society, Conflicts
in Global Society, and Ideas and Ideals of Peace and Ethnicity
Studies. Some subjects are given by staff from external institutions:
the United Nations University, Japan Institute for International
Affairs and the Mitsubishi Research Institute which are in partnerships

- Hosei University
The
Hosei University runs lectures in military and peace studies, ethnicity
issues, and psychology of peace studies at the Department of Politics,
the Faculty of Law. At the Faculty of Intercultural
Communication, there are lectures in nation-state and ethnicity,
conflict and ethnicity, peace studies and intercultural communication.
Both faculties offer BA degree programmes. The Hosei Graduate School
of Social Sciences offers Master and Doctoral degrees
in these related subjects. Also, the University has been holding
open public lectures called the “Hosei Peace College” since
1983.

- International Christian University (ICU): Rotary Peace Center
The Center was established by the International Christian University
in Tokyo with the cooperation of Rotary International in the U.S.
It is one of seven Rotary Centers for International Studies in
Peace and Conflict Resolution around the world. The Center accepts
10 scholars to study for a Masters degree in peace studies, focusing
on international conflict resolution. They will enrol at ICU in
one of the three divisions of the Graduate School: the Divisions
of Education, Public Administration or Comparative Culture.

Faculty of International Studies at the Meiji Gakuin University
in Tokyo engages in the interdisciplinary study of various
cultures and the many global issues that transcend national boundaries.

Defense Academy in Japan: Department of International Relations
Based
in Kanagawa, National Defense Academy in Japan (NDA) was
originally designed for cadets, who serve as the core of Japanese Self-Defense
Forces, but also accepts overseas students. The Department

- Ritsumeikan University
The
College of International Relations at the Ritsumeikan University
in Kyoto offers BA, MA and Ph.D. programmes. The College
consists of four courses including the "International Order & Peace
course". Curriculum subjects in this course
include Peace Studies, International Cooperation,
Ethnicity and Nationalism, International Human
Rights Law and United Nations Studies. The College
has close ties with the Institute of International
Relations and Area Studies and the Kyoto Museum
for World Peace which are also part of the Ritsumeikan

- Soka University: Soka University Peace Research Institute (SUPRI)
Soka
University, Tokyo, emphasises on Peace Education for undergraduate
students and promotes Peace Studies through one of the University’s
institutes, the Soka University Peace Research Institute
(SUPRI), which undertakes peace education and research. Lectures
held by the Institute include Introduction of Peace Studies, Philosophies
of Peace, Conflict Resolution, and Peace and Human Rights.

Sophia University, Tokyo holds Minor (sub-Department) in International
Relations, under the Faculty of Foreign Studies for undergraduates
which runs lectures called Peace Research consisting of causes

Graduate School of Area and Culture Studies at the Tokyo
University of Foreign Studies will launch a new Master program
called "Peace
and Conflict Studies" from April 2004. This
program will be conducted in English. The program

Founded
as an inter-departmental organization of undergraduate
schools at the Waseda University in Tokyo, the Open Education
Center organises several theme collage courses including “Peace
Studies”. Peace Studies College consists
