About Journeys Out
The Journeys Out Project was funded from June 2007-August 2008, through Measure 2.4 of the Peace II Programme
administered on behalf of the Special EU Programmes Body by the Community
Foundation for Northern Ireland to engage a new generation of community leaders in the debate about 'dealing with the past'.
The project is accredited by INCORE/University of Ulster (lead partner) and is being delivered in partnership with Intercomm based in North Belfast
and the Peace and Reconciliation Group (PRG) based in Derry/Londonderry.

Participants in the Journeys Out project have been involved in a series of trainings, community workshops and residentials, and have also been interviewed for a web-based archive (further details and links to reports of these activities can be found below). To support participants' learning two resource centres have also been developed:
Participants
The Journeys Out participants include a total of 17 community
leaders drawn from the following areas in North Belfast: Whitewell/White
City/Rathcoole, Limestone/Newington/Lower Shankill, Glenbryn/Ardoyne,
Tigers Bay/New Lodge and Duncairn interface; and from Currynieran/Tullyally,
Fountain/Bishop Street, Clooney Estate/Lincoln Courts/Gobnascale/Irish
Street in Derry/Londonderry. Eight Peer Mentors from both cities were selected to support participants as they complete project activities.
Project Activities
June 2007-August 2008 participants have:
- Contributed to 'dealing with the past' audits of their local areas.
- Undertaken intensive training in peer education
and facilitation skills.
- Delivered workshops in their local communities to begin to explore what has happened
in terms of dealing with the past in their local areas, as well as to identify the gaps and outstanding challenges.
- Participated in an international residential at the International
Leadership Institute in Amman, Jordan, 12th-19th January 2008 with representatives from Israel/Palestine, Sri Lanka and South Africa to share and discuss different local
and international approaches to dealing with the past. A report on this study visit is available on request.
- A web-based resource centre providing further information and links to how Israel/Palestine, Sri Lanka and South Africa have sought to deal with the legacy of a violent past is currently under construction.
- Been video interviewed for
inclusion in a web-based
archive of community leaders’ journeys
from conflict to participation.
- Completed a study visit to Israel/Palestine, 19th-25th April 2008. A brief report of this study visit is available on request.
- Contributed to the design and delivery of a Journeys Out training module which was piloted at INCORE's 2008 Summer School.
- Contributed to a seminar with policymakers to share learning
from the project, which took place in June 2008.
Project Development
- INCORE and its associated project partners are currently seeking grant-aid support for the expansion and development of the Journeys Out Project from 2008 onwards.
