The Clinton International Summer School 17-24 June 2016

The Clinton International Summer School at INCORE provides a structured learning opportunity to analyze the dynamic and constantly changing field of conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Focusing on the latest research and concepts in peace and conflict studies and practice, participants are invited to compare, contrast and learn from different perspectives. Specifically, the School will seek in 2016 to to advance peacebuilding through positive change and economic development.

In March 2013 President Clinton made his fifth trip to Derry-Londonderry demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the peace process in Northern Ireland. President Clinton walked the Peace Bridge with Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume and his wife, Pat. President Clinton then addressed a public audience of some 3,000 people in the Guildhall Square of the city. President Clinton told the crowd “never underestimate the impact that this small place has had on the large world because of that peace agreement…people want to know how it was done. You have inspired the world”.

The President pointed out that other societies are looking to Northern Ireland as an example of how violence can be transformed into peace. The recent ceasefire by the Basque-separatist group ETA, and the beginning of decommissioning there, is an example of a society that looked to the Northern Ireland model. In addition to the lesson learning Northern Ireland can offer, a further consistent message coming from President Clinton has through the years resonated with the philosophy of John Hume who always linked non-violence with economic growth.

In 2016, our Summer School programme will therefore focus directly on how peacebuilding can be enhanced by economic development.

Specifically, the programme will focus on building a new generation of global peacebuilders who can not only use the lessons from Northern Ireland peace process in their own contexts, but couple this with leadership, entrepreneurship and economic development. The Summer School will draw on a unique partnership of INCORE’s conflict transformation skills and facilitators from Ulster Business School.

Previous participants have included USAID, European Union DG External Relations, UK Department for International Development, World Food Programme, UN Department for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and others.

The INCORE Summer School is recognised by the Peace Operations Training Institute, and may form part of The Certificate-of-Training In Peace Support Operations (COTIPSO) Programme. Visit http://www.peaceopstraining.org for further details.

This year the Summer School will run from June 17-24 2016. We are currently accepting applications and offering bursaries to participants from a select number of countries.

We will offer the following course:

  • Peacebuilding through Entrepreneurship

    (Facilitated by Michael McQuillan, Brandon Hamber  and Tim Brundle)
    This module will provide the participants with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand Northern Ireland¹s historical conflict and that region’s continuing road to reconciliation, peace and prosperity. The programme will begin with an introduction to the Northern Ireland conflict to place the module in context. Participants will also meet local groups, peacebuilders and entrepreneurs. This will allow the students to get a good grounding in the local context and what can be learned from for their local contexts. The main part of the programme will focus more directly on advancing positive change and economic development in their home communities. The students will be required to identify in advance a project that would improve the economic and social conditions in their home region. Our team will then work with you to develop your idea over the course of the week enhancing it and helping put social change into practice.

Facilitators
  • Brandon Hamber

    Professor Brandon Hamber is the Director of the International Conflict Research Institute (INCORE) and the John Hume and Thomas P. O’Neill Chair in Peace at Ulster University. He is also a member of the Transitional Justice Institute at the university, and is an associate of the African Centre for Migration and Society at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.   He has consulted to a range of community groups, policy initiatives and government bodies in Northern Ireland and South Africa.  He has undertaken consulting and research work, and participated in various peace and reconciliation initiatives in Liberia, Mozambique, Bosnia, the Basque Country and Sierra Leone, among others. He has written extensively on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the psychological implications of political violence, and the process of transition and reconciliation in South Africa, Northern Ireland and abroad.  He has published some 50 book chapters and scientific journal articles, and 4 books.  He is Board member of the Belfast-based Healing Through Remembering, as well as Netherlands-based Impunity Watch.  He is part of the International Advisory Group of Fambul Tok, Sierra Leone and also on the Advisory Group of the Education & Society stream of the British Council.
  • Michael Mc Quillan

    Michael was appointed to the role of Director of The Business Institute at Ulster University in July 2014. Michael is well known in Business and Academia.  Over 25 years he has created and built several businesses. Most notably, as co-founder and Managing Director of the streat, he developed the award winning cafe business from concept creation to a network of more than 90 company operated and franchised outlets throughout Ireland and Scotland. The business was acquired by the Henderson Group in 2010. He has had a career long involvement with academia and the skills development agenda.  He has advised government on skills development and the development of an entrepreneurial society.

    He was appointed in 2010 as a Visiting Professor to the Ulster Business School (Ulster University). He is the Chairman of People1st Employers Forum in Northern Ireland.  In May 2013 Michael was appointed, by Minister Foster, as a member to the board of Tourism and sits as non-executive director on several Northern Irish businesses. Through McQuillan Associates, a business growth consultancy he established in 2012, he has provided a range of consultancy, advice and mentoring - helping businesses to identify and pursue opportunities for growth. He regularly delivers keynote presentations at business events throughout UK and Ireland.

  • Timothy Brundle

    Timothy Brundle is Director of Research & Innovation at Ulster University. Timothy directs Ulster’s research strategy, governance and administration, and guides its commercial output through knowledge transfer and intellectual property commercialisation. He also holds the position of Executive Director of Innovation Ulster Ltd, Ulster’s venturing and investment company. Timothy has worked throughout his career in research-led organisations, with a focus on developing their customer-orientation, economic impact, business outcomes and shareholder value. He has led the establishment of more than 35 high tech start up companies, secured over £380m of Venture Capital, managed a profitable investment fund and ensured investor value from company acquisitions and a stock market floatation. He is an experienced and skilled member of the Board of both young companies and mature public Institutions, including serving as a Director of many of Ulster’s spin out companies, Invest NI and the UK Knowledge Transfer Network. Prior to his appointment with Ulster, on behalf of QinetiQ Group PLC, he held the positions of both Director of Marketing and Technology Transfer Director within the UK Ministry of Defence. Internationally, Timothy has provided advice to the US State Department on the development of economic ties between Northern Ireland and the United States, has provided consultancy for the European Union on university commercialisation within Accession States, advice to the Department for Business Innovation & Skills on research funding and is a committee member of the US Association of University Technology Managers. Timothy holds both a Master of Medical Science Degree and an MBA from Queen’s University of Belfast and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biotechnology from the University of South Wales. Outside of his role at Ulster, he is an active Angel Investor, a member of the Ulster University Jordanstown Ju Jitsu team, a member of Bangor Lawn Tennis Club and a keen guitarist. He lives in Bangor West with his wife Jo, their daughter Francesca, and a basset hound called Bono.

All Inclusive Rate: this rate is inclusive of all fees, tour and fieldtrip transport, meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), accommodations and activities but does not include the cost of flights, local transport to the Summer School or Visa if needed

If you do not want University Accommodation (Sunday to Friday night inclusive) subtract £150 from above.


Cancellation Policy 

Cancellations will be subject to an administrative fee of 25%. No refunds will be issued for cancellations after 15th May 2016.

If you are applying for a visa and it is declined please note the above cancellation policy will still apply. You are expected to pay for your own visa costs. Further information about visas is available on our FAQ page.

Accommodation  

The first two nights take place at the Corrymeela Centre. The next six nights are at the University accommodation (standard student accommodation).

Application Process 

The International Summer School attracts experienced participants from a wide diversity of backgrounds. The small class sizes mean that spaces are limited and are in high demand. Individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Application Forms need to be completed in full to be entered into the selection process. Applications received after the deadline (23:59pm GMT on the 18th of April 2016) will not be considered. Application results will be available by March 25th. Once notified, the full receipt of the Tuition Fee is required to ensure confirmation of a place in the Summer School.

The Clinton International Summer School at INCORE is suited to a range of individuals, including practitioners, academics, researchers and students alike. Applicants are expected to be educated to a minimum of degree level or be completing a degree in a relevant subject area, and/or to have relevant work experience in a peace and conflict related area. All applications are subject to selection on the basis of suitability for the module.

All applicants must be fluent in English and be able to provide proof of fluency in the form of an English writing sample, proof of attendance to an English speaking university or the results of a foreign language proficiency exam such as a TOEFL or the IELTS. In addition an interview may be necessary to determine English proficiency.

Some students may require a Visa in order to travel to the UK to take part in this course. It is each individual students own responsibility to obtain a Visa. You are expected to pay for your own visa costs. Once you have been accepted and payment has been received we will provide a formal letter of acceptance needed for a Visa application.

Bursaries

“Applications for INTERNATIONAL bursaries now closed for bursaries"

The Clinton International Summer School at INCORE is pleased to announce that for the 2016 Summer School we will be offering full bursaries that will cover the full cost of attendants (including the cost of meals, accommodations, activities and flights). This year in an effort to fulfill our commitment to diversity we invite young entrepreneurs who are nationals and current residents of one of these following countries, which are currently emerging from conflict, to apply for a bursary;

    • Kosovo
    • Lebanon
    • Sri Lanka
    • South Africa
    • Uganda
    • Venezuela

We look forward to being able to offer these bursaries to other countries in the years to come. Applicants must obtain a Visa, pay for their own visa, speak fluent English and provide proof of residency in one of the above countries (such as a letter from an employer or University).
